Today is the start of Hate Crime Awareness Week. We want to let you know that this horrible crime is not tolerated in Wolverhampton and over the next week we’ll be sharing what it is and how to report it! We are delighted to partner with Safer Wolverhampton Partnership and Victim Support West Midlands

Having received excellent responses from yourselves during our coronavirus focus groups, I’d thought you’d be interested to hear about “Relighting Our City” – the Council’s framework for the city’s Covid recovery. Local residents, community organisations, city businesses, Councillors and other partners have all been engaged as part of its development, and the plan sets out the key priorities for all of the Council’s recovery work.

We’ve launched an online platform where city residents and community partners can find out more about the plan’s priorities, and leave comments to share their views and ideas.  It would be great if you could have a look over this and let us know your feedback. As I stressed during our focus groups, we want to put the city’s communities at the heart of our recovery work - your views are vital to make this a success.

The Relighting Our City platform can be reached through this link: https://wolverhamptonrecovery.commonplace.is/. Please do share this with anyone that you think would be interested.

The plan has five priority themes, which are similar to some of the themes discussed in our focus groups:

  1. Support people who need us most
  2. Create more opportunities for young people
  3. Generate jobs and learning opportunities
  4. Grow our vital local businesses
  5. Stimulate vibrant high streets and communities

More information about the recovery plan and the launch of the platform can be found here: https://www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/news/relighting-our-city-share-your-views.

Carer Support Newsletter October 2020

Dear Carer

Hope you are well

Please find enclosed the latest copy of our Carer newsletter.

Just as the newsletter went to print the Government announced the NHS Covid 19 app, so we haven’t had an opportunity to publish an article about the benefits for everyone and how to download the app.

As you are aware there are new restrictions are in place to stop the spread of Covid-19 in Wolverhampton. This is a worrying time for everyone especially if you are a carer looking after someone who needs extra help. The new NHS Covid 19 app will help us to play a key role in the fight against the virus.

The app is free to download from the AppStore or Google Play and will work on the majority of Apple and Android smartphones.

The app will help the NHS understand where and how Covid-19 is spreading so that the authorities can respond more quickly and effectively. It enables people to report symptoms, order a coronavirus test and check into venues by scanning a QR code. It will also notify users if they have come into contact with someone who later tests positive for coronavirus.

By installing the app on your smartphone, you will be helping to protect your family, friends and those in your community as well as yourself. This is because the app supports the NHS's wider Test and Trace programme to stop the spread of the virus – and the quicker we can do that, the sooner we can get back to a more normal life.

Even if you do not have a compatible smartphone yourself, you will still benefit from other people downloading the app because they will be helping the NHS understand more about how the virus spreads and be supporting the Test and Trace process.

For more information about the NHS Covid-19 app, please visit www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/covid-19-mobile-app or www.covid19.nhs.uk.

If you need assistance to download the app please contact The Carers Team on 01902 553409 who will be able to advise you.

Please don’t forget, if you have something you’d like us to consider for the next or future editions of the newsletter, please contact the team via email carer.support@wolverhampton.gov.uk.

Kind regards

The Carer Support Team

Here are some of the key things we all must to do to stop the spread of coronavirus in Wolverhampton. Director of Public Health John Denley said: "Covid-19 hasn't gone away, but if we all work together, we will stop the spread – and there are 10 steps we all must take in order to defeat this virus."

1) Don't allow people you either don't live with or who aren’t part of your support or care bubble into your home or garden, or visit theirs.
2) Hands: Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds.
3) Face: Wear a face covering where required, unless you are exempt for medical or other reasons.
4) Space: Stay 2m apart from people you do not live with, or 1m-plus with extra precautions if 2m is not possible.
5) Download the Covid-19 app from www.covid19.nhs.uk.
6) Work from home if you can.
7) Adhere to the 10pm curfew for pubs, restaurants and bars.
8) Support businesses which are Covid-secure – and take your custom elsewhere if they are not.
9) Get a test if you have symptoms of Covid-19.
10) Share your contact details for Test and Trace purposes and self-isolate as required.

Are you interested in creating change in your community? Does your faith create a strong desire for social action and tackling injustice?

Transforming Communities Together (TCT) seeks to support people and communities to thrive and flourish. We’re looking to recruit a trustee from within the BAME communities.

We were formed in 2014, as a Joint Venture between the local church and a national Christian charity. We work across all four Black Country boroughs, as well as the whole of Staffordshire and northern Shropshire.

Our mission is to partner with others, seeking the common good, working for justice as people of hope, so that communities may flourish and those who are vulnerable, isolated, and disadvantaged might enjoy life in its fullness.

Our goal is to empower churches and other faith groups, individuals, groups and communities to respond effectively to the issues of poverty and social justice that they encounter.

This ethos begins with our staff, volunteers, and trustees, who are by far our most important assets. We seek to support and nurture all of our team members to fulfil their vocations to reach out and make a difference.

TCT currently has a diverse staff team, with BAME communities well represented, but we would also like to improve the diversity of our Board of Trustees. If you have skills and experience that could help us develop our work please get in touch for an informal chat with our CEO - David Primrose - ceo@tctogether.org.uk or call 07975 644044

Dear JK Rowling,

I am writing this letter to say a big thank you to you.  You may think it strange that a gobby trans woman such as me would wish to thank you after all your recent transphobic outpourings, but let me explain…

I certainly don’t thank you for your lengthy essay last month where you describe the abuse you have suffered (for which you have my sympathy) and in which you stated that you do not hate trans people, while at the same time peddling even more anti-trans mis-information.  Sadly, your diatribe directly caused some trans children to self-harm and other to attempt suicide.

I certainly don’t thank you for your latest book in which I am told (as I have no intention of buying a copy) that a central character is a man who dresses up as a woman in order to abuse women.  Apparently, at one point he talks about being “pre-op”, a term that would be used for transgender people, not crossdressers.  Either way, your key message in the story is that crossdressers or trans people are dangerous people, which in reality, couldn’t be further from the truth!  We are not a threat to anyone.  We just want to live our best lives in peace.

What I do thank you for is for the inspiration that you give me, as every time I see a transphobic message from you, it spurs me on with my mission to reach out to other trans people to let them know that it’s OK to be trans and also to educate as many non-trans people as I can to show them that trans people are just ordinary people who want to be safe, loved and happy - just like everyone else.

Happiness and peace can only come from within and I found both 2.5 years ago when I admitted to myself that I am a transgender woman, after living for 48 years as a man and living with gender dysphoria since the age of 3.  I only hope that you may one day find the same inner peace and happiness that I have found by finally being able to live my truth and that you will no longer feel the need to cause harm to a group of people who you clearly do not understand.  Even though there is a small minority of very noisy anti-trans campaigners who feel the same way as you, thankfully, the vast majority of people in the UK are hugely supportive of trans people and for that, I am extremely grateful.

Love from,

Katie  x

Cut household transmission to stem Covid-19 infections plea

Families across Wolverhampton are being urged to help cut the household to household transmission of coronavirus by staying apart this weekend ahead of new Government rules being introduced on Monday.

Health chiefs are asking residents not to hold parties or large-scale gatherings before the so-called 'rule of six' comes into force – as cases of Covid-19 increase in the city and elsewhere in the region.

From Monday, it will be illegal for people to meet in groups of more than six, indoors or outside, except where additional members of the group are members of the same household or bubble or in certain settings such as schools and workplaces. Social distancing must be observed at all times whenever people from different households or bubbles meet.

This afternoon, restrictions were announced in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull preventing any contact between households from Tuesday onwards – and Wolverhampton’s proximity to these neighbouring areas means that unless people's behaviour changes quickly the city is likely to face further restrictions and greater lockdown measures of its own.

Leader of the City of Wolverhampton Council, Councillor Ian Brookfield, said: “Covid-19 infection rates are rising rapidly across Wolverhampton and the West Midlands, and the spread of the virus is mainly being driven by social gatherings in the home.

"New guidance is being introduced on Monday to limit gatherings to no more than six people in most situations, but we really need local residents to go further than this if we are to avoid the introduction of measures such as those that will be imposed upon residents in Birmingham, Sandwell and Solihull from next week.”

John Denley, Wolverhampton's Director of Public Health, said: "How we all behave over the next few days will have a big impact on what further restrictions we might see here in Wolverhampton, so please everyone, be extra careful this weekend, stay in your household or family bubble wherever possible and, if you must mix with people from other households, do so safely by social distancing at all times."

Latest figures show there were 43.12 cases per 100,000 residents in Wolverhampton in the seven days to 8 September, up from 11.83 cases in the week to 1 September, with the rise in cases mainly driven by a spike in infections among young adults.

Mr Denley added: "The rise in cases in recent days shows how easily Covid-19 is transmitted within households and from one family to another, and that's why everyone must do all they can to stop the spread of coronavirus and help us avoid a local lockdown."

Everyone should:

practice social distancing when they are with anyone who is not a member of their household or support bubble (from Monday, it will be illegal to meet in groups of more than six indoors or outside, with some exceptions)
wear a face covering in enclosed public places like shops and on public transport, unless they are exempt on medical grounds
thoroughly clean frequently touched areas in the home or at work
continue to wash their hands more regularly with soap, for 20 seconds at a time.

Symptoms of Covid-19 include a fever, a new, continuous cough and loss or change to a person’s sense of taste and smell. People with symptoms, no matter how mild, should immediately self-isolate and book a test by visiting www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or calling 119.

The latest information and guidance around coronavirus is available at www.gov.uk/coronavirus and on the council’s own coronavirus pages at www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/coronavirus. There’s lots of advice on how people can protect themselves and their families from coronavirus from the NHS at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus.

feedback gave an overall impression of happy faces and an excitement to be involved in the project and meeting new people
next week will start focussing on what we can do as individuals to encourage more people to do something positive for their community
details of that meeting coming soon

whilst we can all breath a sigh of relief at being reunited with loved ones and returning to our favourite restaurants sadly services at the haven are still in need .
throughout the year our vital wrap around support for women and children subjected to domestic abuse rely heavily on funds  generated from our busy calendar of fundraising events most of which remain cancelled for the foreseeable future
this means a significant loss of vital funding needed to ensure that we can continue to offer the safe haven that many vulnerable women and children in our community turn to in their darkest hour

its not long to go until inclusion week, which is 26th September to 4th October
have you booked speakers for inclusion week yet? i know its been a crazy year, but events can still be held virtually

if you havent already booked all your speakers, i urge you to please make one of them a trans awareness trainer. it doesn't have to be me ( as there are several great trans speakers),but it would be lovely if you do chose me!

i can do sessions ranging from 1 to 3 hours and i always tell my incredible story. I came out very publicly as a transgender woman after living for 48 years as a man. i use a lot of humour in my sessions. a recent attendee said it was the most interesting webinar so far and definitely the funniest. i think its important to entertain as well as to educate as i really don't want people falling asleep during my sessions
please contact me now if you would like to book me for inclusion week
and remember its not just ok to be trans. it can be cool to be trans

travellers must self - isolate if travelling from certain locations
people who are returning to Wolverhampton from a holiday or other trip abroad are being reminded that they may be required to self isolate for 14 days to help prevent the spread of coronavirus
all travellers will need to self isolate for the first 14 days after they arrive unless they are in countries that form part of the travel corridor with the UK
key holiday destinations such as SPAIN and FRANCE were removed from the travel corridor in resent weeks due to increasing levels of  COVID -19 infections in the two countries ,meaning holidaymakers were required to self -isolate on their return. yesterday ,SWITZERLAND, JAMANICA and the CZECH REPUBLIC became the latest countries to be taken off the list.
in addition, residents or visitors travelling to the UK from any country, regardless of weather they are on the travel corridor or not, must provide their journey and contact details.
for full details of coronavirus regulations regarding travel, and a list of countries   which are currently on the travel corridor, please visit http://www.gov.uk/guidence/coronavirus-covid-19-travel-corridors

anyone not self isolating where required could be fined £1,000
people who don't provide accurate contact information face a fine of up to £3,200
councillor JASBIR JASPAL the city of WOLVERHAMPTON councils cabinet member for public health and wellbeing, said its  important that people are aware of the regulations regarding travel into the UK ,and that they self isolate for 14 days if required this is because it can take up to 14 days for coronavirus symptoms to appear.
so if you are planning on going away, or you are due to return to the UK shortly ,please check the latest travel guidance and help prevent the spread of covid-19.

latest data shows there were 12.18 cases of covid-19 per 1000,000 people in Wolverhampton over the seven days up to 24 august ,compared to 17.92 per 1000,000 in the seven days up to 17 august
symptoms of covid-19 include a fever a new continuous cough and loss or change to a persons sense of taste and smell. People with symptoms ,no matter how mild ,should immediately self-isolate and book a test by visiting http://www.nhs.uk/coronavirus   or calling 119

anyone who tests positive for covid-19 will be contacted by NHS test and trace and will be asked to share information about people that have been close contacts recently.

Lockdown has been a very testing time for us all ,its put a lot of pressure on certain event's that are annually ran,But has also taught us new ways in which to connect us with each other and event's via the internet. Its not the same not being face to face in person physically but with technology we have had the facilities to do event's via zoom teams and social media. Gatherings have been missed massively by us all with the LGBTQI and our pride events and hopefully this will just mean we can only can make it bigger and better next year when lockdown is all over(hopefully)then we can all get back out and have our beautiful and meaningful pride parade and gatherings
